Remo Fernandes

Remo Fernandes is a Goa born Portuguese singer and musician. He is also known as pioneer of Indian pop music. He performs pop/rock/Indian fusion and is also a film playback singer. His musical work is a fusion of many different cultures and styles that he has been in his travels around the world. He has written and sung in Hindi, English, Konkani, French and Portuguse language. He was born on 08-05-1953 to Bernado and Louisa fernandes in Panjim, Goa. Remo persued his Architecture degree in Sir J.J College of Architecture, Mumbai.
Career
In school, Remo developed his guitar playing skills along with a group of friends and formed a school band, named “The Beat 4”. He wrote his first song around at 14 and won prizes as best composer, best vocalist and best lead guitarist in many competetions. He continued writing songs, playing solo or with different bands, including Bombay’s top bands. He released an album, “Ode to the Messiah” in 1975. After graduation, Remo traveled in Europe and North Africa, performing with fusion rock bands and released an album “Roch synergie” in Paris in 1979. He met a group of travelling European artists named Amsterdam balloon company and began to playing in their concerts. Remo recorded his maiden album Goan Crazy (1984) and Old Goan Gold(1985). In 1986, He released his hit album Pack That Smack and Bombay City. In 1986, he was invited to play at official government function in Goa to welcome the Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. There he sang a song titled “Hello Rajiv Gandhi” and it became very popular. Later Remo sang in a concert called Aid Bhopal aimed at raising funds for victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy. Later he sang in many films including Trikal, Jalwa, Bombay, Bekabu, Khamoshi, Pyar To Hona Hi Tha, Daud, Sangharsh and Brindavanam. He also acted in Ek Villain, Bombay Velvet and 99 songs movies. He has given many programs at national and international level.
Awards
Remo bagged many awards in his career. Padma Shree by Indian Government (2007), Press Critics Award, Audience Favorite Award, Overall Second Prize at Dresden International Song Competition (1986), Karamveer Puraskaar by Delhi based NGOs (2007). He has won the Gold Disk Award for his album – Bombay City.
