मानेस्त जगन्नाथ शंकर शेट मुर्कुटे ख्यात शिक्षण तज्ञ, दानी, श्रीमंत व्यापारी. तो 10 फ़ेब्रुवरी 1803 इसवेंत मुरबाद गांवांत जल्मलो. बापाय शंकर मुर्कुटे भांगर आनी वज्रा व्यापारी आशिलो आनी आवय भवानीबाई. मराठी आनी संस्कृत भाशेंतलें विद्वान, नांवलौकीक मेळयिलो इंग्लीश मास्तर्स रॉबर्ट मर्फ़ी आनी मेनवारींग हांका आपल्या पुताक शिकोवपाक शंकरशेटान नेमले दैवज्ञ ब्राह्मण समुदायाचे जगन्नाथ शेट व्यापार व्यवहारांत बुद्वंत आशीलो. अरब, अफ़्घानिस्थान आनी इतर विदेशी व्यापारी तांगेले तिजोरी बॅंक दवरचे बदलाक जगन्नाथ शेट लागी चड विश्वासान दवरतात आशीले.

सामाजीक वावर
जगन्नात शेटान शिक्षणांत उन्नतीकरणाचे अवश्यकते खातीर शाळा आरंभ केलें. नेटीव स्कूल ऑफ़ बोम्बे म्हळाले नांवान प्रसिध जालें. उप्रांत त्या शाळेक एलफिनस्टन शिक्षण संस्थो म्हळेले नांव आयिलें. तिलक गोखले, दादाभायी नवरोजी असले ख्यात व्यक्ती त्या शाळेंत शिकलेंत. चेलियां खातीर शाळा आरंभ करचाक जागो दान दीवनु प्रोत्साह दिला. उप्रांत इंग्लीश स्कूल, संस्कृत शिक्षण संस्थो, संस्कृत ग्रंथालय आरंभ केलें. ताणे ग्रॅंट मेडिकल क्कॉलेज, पेरी प्रोफ़ेसरशिप ऑफ़ ज्युरिस्प्रुडेन्स नांवाचें कायद्यांचे कॉलेज, (भारतांतलें पयलें)सर जीजीभाय जम्शेटजी स्कूल ऑफ़ आर्ट हें चित्रकलेचें क~ऒलेज स्थापन केलें. अशें तरेन सगल्या तरेचें शिक्षण दिवपाची शाळा-कॉलेजां ताणी मुंबयींत उबी केली. 1845 इसवेंत जीजीभाय सांगत मेळन भारतीय रेल्वे मंडळी आरंभ करता. जगन्नाथ शेट सर जोर्ज बर्ड्वुड आनी डा. भावु दाजई सांगत मेळनु मुंबय शहराचे पुनरनिर्माण काम आरंभ केलें. बैकुळांत डा.भावु दाजी लाड संग्रहालय बांदुचाक दान दिलां. द बोंबे अस्सोसियेशन म्हळालो पयलो राजकीय संस्थो आरंभ केलेली ख्याती जगन्नाथ शेटाक पावता.

मान-सम्मान
जगन्नाथ शेट मुंबय शहराचे विधान परिषदाचे सदस्य जावनु आशिलो. मुंबय एसियाटीक सोसायटीचो पयलो भारतीय सदस्य म्हळेले ख्याती पावला. तागेले मरणा उप्रांत एसियाटीक सोसायटीन संगमरवरी फातरान तागेले मू्र्ती एर्स्ट्व्हैल गिरगांव रस्तो आनी चौक (नाना चौक) आनी ग्रॅन्ट रस्तेक जगन्नाथ शेटालें नांव घालनु मान दिला.

Hon Jagannath Shankar Sheth

Hon Jagannath S. Shet Murkute was a philanthropist and educationalist and a businessman. He was born on 10th February 1803 at Murbad. His father Shankar Murkute had a business of jewellery and diamonds and mother Bhavanibai. He was born in the wealthy Daivajna Brahman community in Bombay. His father Shanker Sheth appointed Marathi and Sanskrit Scholar Robert Murphy and menvaring to teach Jagannath. He was engaged in commerce and soon developed a reputation as a very reliable businessman. So high was his credit that Arabs, Afghans and other foriegn merchants chose to place thier treasures in his custody rather than with banks.

Social and Educational Works
Forseeing the need of improvement in education, he became one of the founders of the School Society and the Native School of Bombay. Latter became the Bombay Native Institution and now it is famous Elphinestone Educational Institution. It is the same institution where the well known Tilak, Gokhale, Dadabhai Nauroji were the students. Literary and Scientific Society first opened their girls school to which Jagannath Shet contributed much of essential funds. Other educational projects he began include the English School, the Sanskrit Seminary and the Sanskrit Library, all of which located in Girgaon, South Mumbai. He also established Grant Medical college, Peri professorship of jurisprudence Law College,(first in India) Sir Jeejeebhoy jamshetji school of Arts in Mumbai. In 1845, along with Sir Jeejeebhoy, he formed the Indian Railway Association to bring railways in India. Jagannath Shet, Sir George Birdwood and Dr Bhau Daji were instrumental in some of the major reconstruction efforts of the city. The Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum at Byculla in Mumbai was built with the patronage and philanthropists like Jagannath Sheth. The Bombay Association was the first political organization in Mumbai founded by Jagannath Shet.

Honours
Jagannath Shet became the first Indian to be nominated to the Legislative council of Mumbai. He was the first Indian member of the Asiatic Society Of Mumbai. His marble statue was erected at the Asiatic Society of India. Erstwhile Girgaon Road and chowk (Nana Chowk) at Grant Road are named after him.
