आचार्य धर्मानंद कोसंबी बौद्ध विद्वांस आनी पाली भाशा प्रवीण जावनशीलो. कोसंबी 1876 इसवींत गोवा रज्याचे सांखळी गांवांत सारस्वत ब्राह्मण घराणेंत जल्मलो. तो गुजराथ विद्यापीठाचे पुरातत्व मंदिरांत पाली भाशेचो उपन्यासक जावनशीलो.
वृत्ती जीवन
धर्मानंदाक अध्ययन करचांत खूब आसक्ती. तो आपले बायल आनी भुरग्याक सोडून संस्कृत शिकचे उद्धेशान पूनाक गेलो. उज्जैन, इंडोर, ग्वालियर, प्रयाग जावन आखेराक वारणासीक पावलो. वारणासींत गंगाधरपंत शास्त्री आनी नागेश्वरपंत धर्माधिकारी लागी ताणे संस्कृत अध्ययन केलें. उप्रांत तो बौध तत्व अध्ययन करपाक नेपाळाक गेलो. थंय थावन तो कल्कत्ता जावन श्रिलंका पावलो थंय ताणे पाली भाशेंत बौध धर्माचे अध्ययन करून बौध सन्यास दीक्षा गेतलें. उप्रांत तो बर्मीस भाशेचें बौध पुस्तक संशोधन करपाक बर्माक गेलो. 7 वरस उप्रांत तो कल्कता विश्वविद्यानिलयांत रीडर जावन वृत्ती आरंभ केलें. उप्रांत ताणे बरोडा अनी पूनांत फ़ेर्गुसन कोलेजांत वृत्ती केलें. हारवर्ड यूनिवर्सिटिचो डा. जेम्स वूड्साले आपोवणेक मान दीवन हारवर्डाक गेलो. थंय ताणे विशुद्धिमागग म्हळेलें बौधतत्वाचे पुस्तक प्रकट केलें. उप्रांत ताणे रश्याचे लेनिनग्राड विश्वविद्यानिलयांत पाली भास अध्यापन केलें. भारत स्वातंत्र आंदोलन काळार गुजराथांत मीटाचे सत्याग्रहांत भाग घेतल्यांक तरबेत दितालो. त्या खातीर ताका 6 वरस जैल शिक्षा जालें. बौध सन्यासींक आश्रय दिंवचे खातीर ताणे मुंबयींत बहुजनविहार स्थापन केलां. ताणे जैन धर्मा ग्रंथ अध्ययन करुन भाशांतर केलां. ताणे बरयिलें मराठी कृती “भगवान बुद्ध” केंद्र साहित्य अकाडेमीन इंग्लीष आनी इतर भाशेक भाशांतर केलां. ताणे बौध आनी जैन धर्मा बदल 11 पुस्तकं, ”बोधिसत्व’’ मराठी नाटक बरयलां. निवेदन म्हळेले तागेले आत्मचरित्र गोवाचे भारत पत्रिकेंत धारावाही जावन प्रकट जालां.
Acharya Dharmananda Kosambi was a prominent Indian Buddhist scholar and a Pali language expert. He was born in Sankval village of Goa in 1876 in a Saraswat Brahmin family. He was lecturer of Pali language in archeology temple of Gujarath Vidyapeeth.
Career
After the birth of his child, he left his family and went to Pune with an intention to learn Sanskrit. From Pune, he travelled to Varanasi after brief sojourns in Ujjain, Indore, Gwalior and Prayag. At Varanasi he learnt Sanskrit under the tutelage of Gangadharpant Shastri and Nageshwarpant Dharmadhikari. Later he moved to Nepal to study Budhism and traveled to Calcatta and then Ceylon. There he studied for 3 years and was ordained Budhist monk. Later he went to Burma and undertook comparitive study of Budhist Text in Burmese language. After spending 7 years abroad, he started working as a reader at University of Calcutta. Later he went to Baroda to work as a research fellow and finally moved to Fergusson college in Pune. Dr. James Wood invited Kosambi to Harvard University, to complete the Visuddhimagga, a book on Buddhist philosophy. He travelled to USSR and taught Pali at Leningrad University. When Indian Independence movement was at its peak, Kosambi came back to India. He started to recruit volunteers for salt satyagraha, for which he was imprisoned for 6 years. Besides Buddhist works, Kosambi also studied and translated many Jain works. He authoured Bhagwan Budha in Marathi. It was later translated in English and in other Indian languages by Central Sahitya Akademi. He has also authored 11 books on Buddhism and Jainism. He also wrote a play “Bodhisatva” in Marathi. His autobiography written in Marathi – “Nivedan” was a serialized column published in a Goan periodical Bharat. Kosambi founded “BahujanaVihara”, a shelter house for Budhist monks in Bombay.
