World Konkani Centre announces a Week Long Summer Programme on General Linguistics from 20th to 25th May, 2013 at World Konkani Centre, Mangalore.
About the Course Theme: This course is an introduction to linguistics, the scientific study of language. In order to understand what language is, a number of topics are examined, including: The speech sound system (phonetics and phonology), The structure of words and sentences (morphology and syntax), The meaning of words and sentences (semantics), How language can differ across time, between speakers, regions, and situations etc. At the end of this course, one should understand what linguists study and have a good understanding of the core concepts in each of the above topics.
Programme: The course consists of 6 days, starting at 20th May 2013 until 25th May 2013. The typical layout of a course day consists of a morning and afternoon lecture. Each lecture will consist of a combination of classroom style lectures and interactive individual and group exercises and practical work.
Faculty: Eminent experts in Linguistics such as Dr. U.P. Updhyaya, Udupi, Dr. Rocky V. Miranda, Mysore, Dr. Madhavi Sardesai, Goa and Dr. Varija N., Mangalore will give lectures in above topics. Dr. Sushila Upadhyaya will share from her vast experiences in field study.
Registration Cost: The Programme is free of any charges. Participants will be provided with Course Materials and Refreshments. Accommodation is available on prior request.
Last date for registration is 18th May 2013.
Certification and Fellowship: Participation will entitle a certificate along with an eligibility to apply for a short-term fellowship from World Konkani Centre to participate in a field study project.
