WORLD KONKANI CENTRE CALLS APPLICATIONS FOR SCHOLARSHIP

Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund set up by World Konkani Centre, Mangaluru, Invites applications for Merit-Cum-Means Scholarships-2017 from Konkani Speaking students belonging to any caste and religion, seeking professional education in the stream of Engineering and MBBS. Eligibility Criteria will be as follows.

  1. Only candidates with Konkani as mother tongue can apply for this scholarship regardless of caste and religion. Mother tongue certificate need to be provided while applying.
  2. Only Candidates who are seeking admission to the FIRST Year of the Engineering or MBBS course in 2017 can apply.
  3. Only Candidates who scored above 70% in SSLC and in the core subjects in PUC and also secured a Ranking of 20,000 or below in the Common Entrance Test (CET) can apply.
  4. Only Candidates whose total Family Income is less than Rs. 4.50 Lakhs per annum can apply. The references from Family Doctor and a Chartered Accountant should be provided in this regard while applying.
  5. Student should be willing to sponsor 2 students after completion of studies and after securing employment and should contribute 20 days in the year 2017-18 to the community service.

Most deserving candidates will be selected on the basis of verifications by independent panelists and each of the selected candidates will be awarded scholarships amounting Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 40,000 for the Engineering and MBBS aspirants respectively.

Candidates fulfilling above criteria can apply Online for the Scholarships 2017 through an online application module set up by world Konkani Centre on website: www.vishwakonkani.org. Application module will be opened for applying from 10th June 2017. Application Module will be active only till the last date for application 10th July, 2017. Applications received in hardcopy will not be processed for the Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarships 2017. Candidates can login to the website for detailed instructions on preparation for the application process and terms and conditions of the Scholarship Programme.

‘Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund’ envisages grant of Merit-cum-Means Scholarships to students having Konkani language as their mother tongue. Instituted in the year 2010 as envisioned by the eminent thinker and corporate leader T.V. Mohandas Pai, the VKSSF has successfully raised and awarded more than 14,000 scholarships to the tune of about Rs. 15.00 crores. Every year it awards more than 2000 scholarships amounting Rs. 3.00 Crores to deserving students in various disciplines.

As the Fund is functioning on the basis of ‘Stream’ concept, the entire amount generated every year will be distributed to the beneficiaries and no separate corpus will be maintained. Contributions to the Fund will be eligible for Tax Exemption under section 80(G) of the Income Tax Act.

‘Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund’ is administered by a Governing Council comprising eminent personalities. Ramadas Kamath U., Executive Vice President, Infosys is the President of the Fund and Pradeep G. Pai, Managing Director of Hangyo Ice Creams Pvt. Ltd., is the secretary. The council is also guided by Basti Vaman Shenoy, the founder and the president of World Konkani Centre, Dr. Dayananda Pai the Chairman of Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation and R.V. Deshpande, the Chairman Emeritus of the Foundation.

VKSSF awards scholarships to Konkani students of Kerala – Report


Scholarships amounting to Rs 22 Lakhs was awarded to 150 (Degree/Engg) Konkani students from Kerala  on October 21 at Narmada Hall, Karnakodam, Ernakulam.

The award ceremony was organised by Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation (KLCF), World Konkani Centre (WKC), Mangalore and Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund (VKSSF) in association with Anugraha Charitable Trust Ernakulam, Kerala.

In his welcome address Shri R. Bhaskar Shenoi, President, Anugraha said that “the support of parents in enabling the students to excel in education is very vital. Due to the sacrifices made by parents children will be able to achieve success.” He also congratulated the beneficiary students.

Shri Pradeep G. Pai, Secretary, VKSSF, explained how under the leadership of Basti Vaman Shenoy efforts were being taken to implement ‘Vision TVM,’ 25-point programme envisioned by Shri T. V. Mohandas Pai, Patron Trustee, for WKC.

He also informed about the different workshops were being organised under KSHAMATA to bring students to excellent level. He also called upon the people from Kerala for increased involvement in training the students.

Shri R. Hari, Literary Luminary on Bharatiya Culture, who was the guest of honor said that there were three categories of people in the society. The first category of people take maximum from the society but don’t give back anything, whereas the second category of people who are businesslike taking minimum and giving back minimum to the society. And 90 per cent of society is filled with this second category of people.  The third category includes people who take minimum from society but give back maximum. And if the society has to go on the path of progress it needs more and more people belonging to the third category. KLCF and Anugraha charitable trust belong to the third category. He congratulated the World Konkani Centre for its commendable task in providing scholarships to students.

Payyanoor Ramesh Pai, President, Kerala Konkani Academy said student life is very precious. It is the golden moment in everybody’s lifetime which comes only once. Thus students should focus on dreams and make positive efforts in realizing that dream.”

“While all other languages are available at fingertips, why Konkani is not available. Why there in no Konkani online dictionary,” he lamented.

“It is the duty of the Konkani brethren to work towards the betterment of the language.” he said.

VKSSF to Konkani Kudubi students : Report


“More importance should be given in providing education to people belonging to Kudubi community, thus ensuring that they too will get included in the mainstream,” said Shri R. V. Deshpande, Chairman Emeritus, Konkani Bhas Ani Sanksriti Prathistan.

He was addressing the gathering the scholarship award ceremony to Konkani Kudubi  students at Durga Parameshwari Kalyana Mantap, Mandarthi. The programme was organised by organized by World Konkani Centre’s Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation, Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund (VKSSF) in association with Karnataka Rajya Kudubi Seva Sangha and Kudubi Samajodharaka Sangha, Altaru.

“Awarding scholarships to help them in pursuing education is one way of bringing them into mainstream and contributing to their development.” He furher added.

A total number of 161 scholarships were awarded of which 97 was given to PU students.

Shri Jayaprakash Hegde, Member of Parliament, Udupi. Shri K. Raghupathi Bhat, MLA, Udupi and Shri Dhananjay Shetty, Managing Trustee, Shri Durga Parameshwari Temple, Mandarthi will be the guests of honour.

He was addressing the gathering the scholarship award ceremony to Konkani Kharvi Community organized by World Konkani Centre’s Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation, Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund (VKSSF) in association with Akhila Karnataka Konkan Kharvi Mahajan Sabha (AKKMS) at R. N. Shetty, Kalyan Bhavan, Kundapur on October 7.

“In the past  many people found it difficult to provide education to their children due to poverty and also because there was a dearth of educational institutions. Due to which gaining education became confined only one section of the society. But now the times have changed now we find that the State Government, Central Government, Private Organisations and Philanthropists are making a sizeable contribution thus giving the required impetus to education.” Deshpande  added.

“Undivided Dakshina Kannada District which is the land of visionaries intelligent people had given utmost importance to education.” Deshpande said.

In his address Shri Ramdas Kamath U., President, VKSSF, informed that “about 3,000 Konkani speaking families have been given Insurance Protection. There are plans to give them medical insurance too. Various steps have been taken to increase the scholarship fund, giving importance to Higher Education, and training talented students.”

A total number 215 scholarships was awarded of which 130 was given to PU students, 81 to Degree and 4 to Engineering.

Advising students to pursue higher studies Shri Pai said that “there is an aspiration deficit in our country. There is a need to boost aspirations. Students should develop problem solving abilities.”

“There is no dearth of information. One should learn to use this information to solve problems. The students should develop their personality, groom themselves, dress well, speak well, be presentable to make an impact.” he added.

Stressing on the need to speak in one’s mother tongue Shri Pai stated that “ Learn English but at the same time do not forget Konkani. Mother tongue plays an important role in carrying forward ones tradition and culture,’ he added and said that in the next twenty years, the Konkani community can be globalised community. The advent of World Wide Web has decreased the barriers between nations. The social networking sites have connected the World into one country virtually.”

“Many students stop pursuing their education due to financial constraints. With scholarships, their aspirations get boosted,” said Shri Jagdish Shettar, Chief Minister, Karnataka.

He further added that Karnataka Government has allotted Rs 5 crore of which Rs 1.5 crores has already been released to the Centre.

Shri Oscar Fernandes, MP, called upon the Konkanis to strive hard to bring Konkani community to the forefront.

In his presidential address Shri Basti Vaman Shenoy, President, World Konkani Centre gave a call to the Konkanis to strengthen the community.

As many as 1,300 students received the scholarships of which 480 were engineering students and the rest were MBBS students. This year scholarship amounting to Rs 50 lakh was awarded to 550 PU and Degree students from Kharvi and Kudubi communities. Around 100 Konkani speaking degree students from Kerala were also selected for scholarships.
VKSSF has also instituted a study abroad programme under which around 10 students will be awarded Rs 1 lakh.

KSHAMATA

Addressing a press meet after the scholarship distribution programme, Shri Ramdas Kamath U., Senior Vice-President, Infosys, informed that WKC has introduced a series of training programmes for the benefit of scholarship beneficiaries and the Konkani youth.

WKC is aiming towards a holistic development approach. Different programmes such as ‘Beneficiary orientation and training programme‘ (BOTP), ‘Beneficiary Language Skills Improvement Programme (BLSIP),’ General Management and Communication Skills Programme (GMCS),”Graduates Employability Skills Development Programmes (GRADES) are being organised.

“We are also planning to introduce ‘Career development programmes,’ ‘Entrepreneurial development programme,’ and ‘Information on Higher Studies programme,” he said and added that there are plans to develop a web-based programme that will help students.
“We also plan to share information about the job content and the vacancies available in different sectors,” he said.

3. Only Candidates who scored above 70% in SSLC and in the core subjects in PUC and also secured a Ranking of 20,000 and below in the Entrance Examination (CET) can apply.

4. Only Candidates whose total Annual Income of the family is less than Rs. 2.5 Lakhs can apply. The references from Family Doctor and a Chartered Accountant should be provided in this regard while applying.

5. Student should be willing to sponsor 2 students after completion of studies and after securing employment and should contribute 20 days in the year 2012-13 to the community service.

Mohandas Pai, the VKSSF has successfully raised and distributed Rs. 50 Lakhs to 162 deserving students in the year 2010 and Rs. 1.00 Crore to 285 students in the year 2011.
